Margaret Rustin discusses the continuing relevance of Klein’s Narrative of a Child Analysis and offers some thoughts on contemporary approaches to clinical practice in the light of Klein’s direct and fearless approach to interpretation. The paper was presented at ‘Before and beyond words: Exploring Melanie Klein’s work and influence’, held in Pitlochry in November 2017, organised by the Royal College of Psychiatrists in Scotland, Medical Psychotherapy Faculty in association with the Melanie Klein Trust.
